Let me comment about this min setting.
YES YOU CAN have NO detonation at 0. Why? Because the unit STILL retards in the mid range, even if it's not retarding because of boost.
The JR BTC is a function of Boost and RPM. It adds timing low and high, removes it from the middle.
BUT even if you get NO detonation at the zero setting, not all detonation is audible, it should be run at about 2-4 clicks at 6psi, or 4-7 at 8psi etc. for safety. A LOT has to do with injectors, fuel, altitude, cam gear settings, fuel quality and octane, air temp etc.. so becareful.

CROM, yes it is correctly set. I tested it with a timing gun and blowing into the vaccum hose, the timing mark moved (retarded). The car was originally at 12 BTDC before BTC...when the BTC installed, 12 click away from zero feels like crap. I've been running at 0 for about 3K miles now...I guess I'll take Lungean's advice and move it to 3 http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I'm curious though..when you guys said "I get some detonation at ??? click" do you guys actually *HEAR* the detonation or was it picked up by the J&S safeguard?

Before the BTC, I had my timing at 12. The J&S took out timing more frequently than it does now. When the BTC is at 12 o'clock, it does feel more sluggish (under full boost, it would retard the timing from 16 to 10.
Funny thing about the J&S. I swear that I can hear, quite distinctly, detonation for 1-1.5 seconds before the J&S lights up and starts to retard. From what I understand, the J&S has a motorola processor, so it should react faster than this. Anybody have a similar reaction?

It doesn't matter what microcontroller the J&S is using because it still depends on the programmers code. If the program is too long, or the program interrupts aren't handled correctly then the device may have a slow reaction time.

You can turn the sensitivity up to fix that. But sometimes you get engine noise that sets it off. I get quite often noise that kicks it off when VTEC kicks in.

On my car, the J&S is picking up minor detonation at 3 clicks from minimum, so I run at 4 clicks. At 4 clicks, the j&S occasionally takes out 2-4 degrees of timing in the 3-5K rpm range, but I can live with that. I agree, the car feels noticeably more sluggish at 3-4 clicks, but I don't like the feeling of seeing the J&S monitor light up like a x-mas tree all the time.

I have mine at 6 clicks... but then I'm at 8 psi too. I can get a way with less.. but yes the J&S should not be on all the time... not good.

The J&S is connected to the TPS signal and won't react until the throttle is depressed far enough. So, if there's knock with very little throttle application, the J&S won't do anything about it. Guess what... The TPS relay circuit I've been running on my car for three days now seems to solve that problem. It does this by telling the ECU (and J&S) that the throttle is wide open as soon as there's 1psi or more of boost. So, not only does the circuit eliminate the lean condition at the onset of boost, reducing the likelyhood of knock, it also tells the J&S it can react to knock as soon as there's boost rather than waiting for the throttle to be pressed far enough.
Note: This only works if the J&S taps into the TPS signal closer to the ECU than the relay circuit. Otherwise the J&S sees the real throttle position, not the wide open signal as soon as there's boost.
